Southern Tier Fishing
About this Website

Who put this website together?

That's me, John Lively. I grew up in Waverly NY, and caught my first fish, a 12' chub, on a chunk of hotdog in Shepard's creek. My sophistication in technique and tackle grew in stages, to other types of bait - clippers, tonies, crabs, crickets, grasshoppers, and worms, to fishing Rapalas on ultralight spinning gear for smallmouths, to rudimentary flyfishing, mostly within a bike-ride of home, usually on Shepard's Creek.

Twenty-odd years later, I'm back in the Southern Tier, flyfishing for trout in the spring, river fishing in the summer, and salmon and steelhead fishing in the fall. I have a couple of kids who like to fish, too.

What's the purpose of this site?

I've felt increasing concern over the state of our rivers locally, and about the low level of sportsmanship and stewardship demonstrated by some fishermen in our area. The site is designed to promote the positive aspects of our sport locally, call attention to conservation and access issues, educate fisherman about sportsmanship and stewardship, and provide basic information for people new to the area, or new to fishing.

Site design philosophy

I've deliberately tried to make this site informative, not flashy. The low graphics content makes it faster to get around in, especially for people dialing in over lower speed modems.

Dedication

A generation ago, Wilson Chadderdon, Art Hodel, Tom Coolidge, and Ted Keir gave evenings, weekends, and vacation time, and often money from their own pocket, to give a bunch of "town kids" an introduction to safe, fun, and responsible outdoorsmanship. I never really appreciated what an unselfish gift that was until now.
